One of our Overcomers Academy members, Jay Lee, a former foreign missionary for 47 years in a closed country, has lost 80 pounds in Overcomers Academy. She calls herself the grandma of the group and loves to share her story.

“I’m 75 and I have been overweight or obese most of my life,” she said. “Teresa’s book, Sweet Grace, started me on a journey I never thought I would make. After I read the book, I realized how similar our journeys are.

Keeping Weight Off

“I joined Overcomers in 2015 and have now lost 80 pounds. The biggest surprise to me is that I not only lost the weight but have kept it off. That is a first for me. Overcomers isn’t a diet plan. I knew how to lose weight.

“A key factor in this group is Teresa helps us figure out what causes us to overeat and how to deal with the root issue. I continue in the group for encouragement and motivation to continue to be obedient to God in my eating.”

Really Jay encourages others in our group, as much as others encourage her. She also shares how being in the group helps keep her motivated to continue on her journey and stay true to her commitment.

I remember the day that she shared that she put on a pair of jeans for the first time. It’s these seemingly little things that help motivate her to keep going and to add things to her daily routine like exercise. She leads several Bible studies and prayer groups because, once a missionary always a missionary, but she has finally realized that taking care of her physical body is as important as taking care of herself spiritually.

Not A Diet Program

People ask what is Overcomers Academy? What do you get when you join? Well, it’s all outlined here:  However, it might be more important to say what it’s not and what you don’t get. It’s not a diet program and you don’t get a specific diet plan you must follow.

This group is not about dieting, it is about lifestyle change. It is different in that we are focused on finding the root cause of why we eat rather than focusing so much on what we eat. What we eat is important, but just going on a diet will not guarantee that you can lose weight and keep it off.

We have habits that we’ve spent a long time establishing. We need to change those and adopt new healthier ones that will help us live longer and do more for the Kingdom of God.

What Overcomers Is

In Overcomers Academy, we have guided course content in our extensive video library. There are 20 courses, but there is only one course available when you come into the group. This is the course that gives my foundational principles for change. It has action steps and challenges to help you implement the concepts. When you finish, the next course opens.

This allows you to go at your own pace to allow God to show you how you need to apply the concepts to your life. It’s really not about how much information you can amass or how quickly you can go through the courses and lessons. It’s about applying them to your life.

The Overcomers Facebook group is a supportive community where we interact to encourage and support each other, but also to keep each other accountable on our journeys. We do that in a variety of ways, but one of those is the new feature of using a breakout room. This is a time when we get to know each other and what goals we have. We also have an accountability post every week where individuals share their goals, how they are doing and what help they need.

Getting Unstuck

As your coach, I will answer your questions to help you get to the next level or to overcome obstacles that have you stuck on your journeys. When you join, the Facebook group is like your own personal support group. Everyone in the group understands the difficulties we go through with losing weight. Many have substantial amounts of weight to lose.

Because I have gone through the living nightmare of gaining up to 430 pounds and then losing 250 pounds, I know what you’re facing and what you’re going through no matter how many pounds you have to lose. Thirty pounds can be as hard to lose as 230 and sometimes harder. When we are larger we can lose weight quicker than when we are smaller.

In 2014, God called me to begin an online version of the in-person group that helped me lose weight and keep it off. I love it because we have people from all over the United States and other countries in our group. We have severe; women from India and Australia who have made it a priority to be on our monthly calls even though the calls are at 7 pm CT and it might be early morning their time or the middle of the night where they are.

Their diligence is paying off as they get breakthroughs. On our calls, I can work one-on-one with those who aren’t shy about needing help with whatever is going on in their lives. Many times things like marital issues or extended family difficulties are key components to why we eat when we really want to be losing weight.

The monthly call is recorded and available for those in the group to listen to. This helps others understand how they can work through similar problems. This is exactly how my mentor worked with the group I was in. I learned while he helped others.

God Wants Us To Be Healthy

God is a key component in all that we do. He wants us to be healthy so we can fulfill the destiny he has in mind for us. Ephesians 2:10 TPT says, “We have become His poetry, a re-created people that will fulfill the destiny He has given each of us, for we are joined to Jesus, the Anointed One. Even before we were born, God planned in advance our destiny and the good works we would do to fulfill it!”

We can’t fulfill our destiny or do the good work He has for us to do without being healthy. We live in a body, which we have a tendency to not take care of as we should. God tells us we were His expensive purchase.

As 1 Cor 6:19-20 TPT reminds us, “Have you forgotten that your body is now the sacred temple of the Spirit of Holiness, who lives in you? You don’t belong to yourself any longer, for the gift of God, the Holy Spirit, lives inside your sanctuary. You were God’s expensive purchase, paid for with tears of blood so by all means, then, use your body[ to bring glory to God!”

Essentially God is telling us He put us in a body so He can dwell with us. Because of what He did, placing the Holy Spirit inside us to live, we need to use our bodies to bring glory to Him. This is the main reason we need to lose weight. It’s not to look better or even to feel better, it’s so we can do the work of the Kingdom that God has called us to do.
