Five Minute Fridays was started by Lisa-Jo Baker. Each Friday she gives one word. Those who participate write around that word for five minutes. As it so happens, I usually see her email about the word just before going to bed. But hey it’s only five minutes and this word, Together, captivated me because of the very special day that Sunday, Oct. 20 was for me.
My memoir released Sunday and we had a big book launch party. Together my family, friends and I put on the event. I say together because I could not have done it without each person’s contribution. My nephew and the worship band from his church played for event. My brother introduced me when I spoke. My sister made all the decorations. My brother-in-law, husband and son set up the tables and chairs. My son was the gopher for trips back home to retrieve what I forgot. My niece did my makeup.
But it wasn’t just family who made it happen. Three of my doctors, who helped me on my weight loss journey, came and spoke.
A great friend made a gluten-free, sugar-free meal for 125 since it’s the way I eat now. Three other friends served the guests. Two friends managed the book table. A professional photographer friend took pictures at no charge. Another coordinated the whole event. And a friend’s son captured it all on video.
Sweet Grace: How I Lost 250 Pounds and Stopped Trying to Earn God’s Favor is the recounting of my journey through a humongous and harmful life pattern that spanned more than 30 years of my life. It is the story of how God’s strength was made perfect in my weakness. It’s a story I know will help those who read it because I found victory I never thought existed.
It is hard for me to accept the gift of time and service others give me. As my aunt led the prayer of blessing, the way family and friends supported me made me realize I am not alone in this world. Together we can do so much more than I could by myself.
Seth Godin talks about finding your tribe. I believe I found mine amidst those gathered to usher in my dream that is now a book.
