Jesus came to set us free from the struggles of this life. We are free to struggle if we want to, but why would we? Many of us continue to go round and round the same mountain anyway. We are feeding the struggle and we feel like we can never get free. We are chained to certain foods, especially those made with sugar and flour. We cannot stop with just one.

We know we are getting nowhere, but we keep doing the same things, the same way. We are eating the same foods that have always been our downfall. All along we are expecting something magic to happen and we will change. We know this is the definition of insanity and we are intelligent, cognitive, thinking adults, but we continue in life-stealing habits.
Jesus Set Us Free
The magic has already happened, my friends. Jesus came. He set us free. He released us. Our prison doors are already open. We already have the keys to our freedom. We just have to implement them.
Of course, that is where the difficulty arises. It is hard. I won’t be like every other weight loss guru out there and say it’s easy. It’s not easy. If it were, you would have already done it.
No One-Size-Fits-All Diet
Many people come into my coaching programs just to get a copy of my eating plan. Since I lost 260 pounds then they figure that if they just eat what I eat they will lose weight. Friends, there is no one-size-fits-all diet or eating plan. That’s the first place we struggle when we try to make a new diet work for us.
We are all different. There have been books written about how to eat for your blood type, how to eat for your metabolic type, how to eat if you have this allergy or that. Truth is we have to get our eating plan from the One who made us.
Even though you may be a food addict, you may not need to eat sugar-free and gluten-free to lose weight like I have, but you will have to surrender the foods that you are running to instead of going to God. This it the truth freedom God’s way are universal. His principles are one-size-fits-all! We must choose Him over any other source or substance to get strength for our journey. Surrender is the only way to freedom.
Holy Spirit
When we run to food for comfort, we are ignoring what Jesus said. “And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever.”1 Of course He was talking about the Holy Spirit.
How does the Holy Spirit feel when we replace Him with comfort foods? They provide a momentary pleasure to our tastebuds, but a lifetime of pain and disease in our bodies. The Holy Spirit provides long-lasting, feel-it-all-over comfort. There’s nothing like His comfort. I can live without sugary desserts as long as I have Him!
Father God
Throughout the Scripture God the Father is pictured as our protector. “The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.”2
“Jehovah Himself is caring for you! He is your defender. He protects you day and night. He keeps you from all evil and preserves your life. He keeps his eye upon you as you come and go and always guards you.“3
On some level I used food to protect me. If I could eat and make myself larger then I wouldn’t get advances from men and I would be safe from the ones who might harm me. How do you think God feels when we trust in the taste of our favorite foods more than Him?
Jesus
Jesus is our companion, the one who has lived in our shoes, walked the same journey on earth that we walk. He lived fully human, struggling with everything we have struggled with, yet came through it perfect in every way.4
“Now we know what we have—Jesus, this great High Priest with ready access to God—let’s not let it slip through our fingers. We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all—all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help.”5
How does He feel when we sit with our comfort foods, eating away our pain, instead of sharing our difficulties with Him?
Feeding the Struggle
We continue to feed our struggle with the very thing that caused the struggle in the first place. It’s an endless cycle, like everything the evil one uses to bring us down.
All he has to do is get us to focus on anything else besides God Himself. Problem is, he has an easy job because we work with him to bring about our own demise.
Sugar and foods made with sugar or high starch content are not our comforters. They are not our protectors and they certainly aren’t a good companion. (See my post Good-bye Lover to understand more about that.) They are the enemy.
My Kryptonite
I was asked during an interview how I could give up sugar forever. I gave a good answer at the time, but I would add to it today, “Because sugar is my kryptonite. It is my enemy. It is what the evil one was using to try to steal, kill and destroy my destiny.”
What’s your kryptonite? Are you ready to surrender it totally to God and get free of the struggle?
